Former NFLer-turned-actor Kerry Rhodes married Australian actress Nicky Whelan on Saturday, April 15, 2017, in an outdoor ceremony at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles, California.

The couple worked with event planner Stacey Ruiz to create a lavish outdoor garden ceremony under a white wrought-iron wedding arch with stone pillars. The wedding was officiated by Star Trek: The Next Generation star Marina Sirtis, and celebrity friends Brenda Song and AnnaLynne McCord attended alongside the couple’s family and close friends, from several corners of the globe.

“We had family from Australia and Alabama and the U.K. all in one room,” Whelan told People in an exclusive interview. “It was an incredible energy of love and laughter.”

Whelan wore her hair in a high updo, with floor-length veil, platform heels, and her high-necked, open-backed lace dress was designed by J’Aton Couture. Rhodes wore a blue suit by Tom James, and the bridesmaids wore blush pink Amsale. Rhodes, 34, and Whelan, 35, exchanged custom his-and-hers rings from Gabriel Jacobs of Rafaello & Co., who also designed Whelan’s 6.5-carat engagement ring. White-and-pastel yellow flower arrangements for the outdoor ceremony and indoor reception were provided by Petals LA.

Cake Boss Buddy Velastro, a friend of the couple, created the three-tier wedding cake at his Carlo’s Bakery, but Whelan said the best part was connecting with friends and family in a phone-free environment, with John and Joseph Photography on tap to capture the day. “It was amazing to watch everyone get up and communicate and dance — not one person was looking down all night,” said Whelan. “It really proved our point about how incredible people are when they come together and don’t have their cell phones.”

Whelan found fame in Australia on popular soap Neighbours, and moved to L.A. in the late-2000s. She met Rhodes on the set of a comedy sketch in 2014, and he proposed at their L.A. home in February 2016, soon after Valentine’s Day.
