WWE superstar John Cena proposed to his girlfriend, Diva Nikki Bella, live on Wrestlemania Sunday night. After Cena and Bella (real name: Stephanie Nicole Garcia-Colace) defeated Mike “The Miz” Mizanin and his wife, Maryse Ouellet, in a tag-team match-up, Cena took the mic and grabbed a little black box.
Getting down on one knee, he proposed in front of a live audience with a huge diamond ring. The crowd excitedly witnessed Bella say yes before the couple sealed the engagement with a kiss.
Cena, 39, and Bella, 33, have dated for five years, and fans have been able to watch their relationship grow on Bella’s reality series’ Total Divas and Total Bellas. The latter costars Nikki and her fellow Diva sister, Brie, who is expecting a daughter with her husband, pro wrestler Dan Bryan, later this month.
Brie was among the first to offer congratulations to the pair on Twitter, stating, “Happy tears!!!! They always felt married to me but to see it…wow!!! Welcome to the family @JohnCena.”
In an morning-after interview on Today Monday morning, Cena revealed that he had been planning to propose as publicly as he did for a year and a half, and Bella had deep appreciation for the gesture, even though she swore she didn’t see it coming.
“It’s where we met. It’s our passion, it’s our life and so, for me, it was kinda like he’s my prince charming and he’s just saying I want her to be my queen at her home and in front of our family. Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for it to be any other way. It was perfect,” she gushed.
He also shared the inspiration behind her custom-designed Tiffany ring. “The ring represents our entire relationship up until this point. If you look at the stones on the side, there are four individual stones on each side. One side represents me and one side represents her and the four means the years we’ve been together to come to center point. … The center point is a 4.5 carat round brilliant cut Tiffany diamond that represents the four and a half years we took to get right here,” he said.
This will be Bella’s first marriage and Cena’s second – he was married to Elizabeth Huberdeau from 2009-2012. On Today, Bella revealed that she did not want a long engagement, and the couple was already checking their calendar.
“I’m ready to get this party started!” she said. Watch the proposal, below.
