Broadway star Billy Porter, a Tony winner for Kinky Boots, proposed to his longtime boyfriend Adam Smith – and eyewear company owner – on December 29th over a romantic dinner in London. Porter and Smith, 35, whom the Broadway star calls his “soulmate,” dated for a year in 2009, split but remained close friends, reuniting in 2015.

Once the couple started discussing when to get married, Porter, 47, suggested it was important for them to marry before President Obama left office January 20th. Both found growing up difficult in conservative surroundings, and felt it was important to take a stand and show the world what their love looks like.

So, on Saturday, January 14, 2017, just 16 days after their engagement, the couple wed in front of 45 guests inside a friend’s penthouse in Chelsea, New York City. “I’ve thrown a lot of parties, so I can do it pretty quick!” Porter told People Magazine. “We thought: We’ll get a beautiful cake, we’ll get cases of champagne, and it’ll just be cake and champagne and live music. The thought was, we would do this quick, get it in under Obama, then later down the line, we’re gonna throw a more big, flashy party and stuff that we actually plan and can have everybody. So that is the plan!”

Decked out in Thom Browne and Prada suits, the grooms exchanged platinum Cartier wedding bands. After the ceremony, the newlyweds sipped champagne with their guests, and noshed on sweets provided by Empire Cakes. The white wedding cake featured black bowtie detailing and a two-groom topper.
