The very first winner of American Idol (whose success post-show has only been topped by country darling Carrie Underwood) is getting married! Kelly Clarkson announced today on Twitter that her boyfriend of one year, Nashville-based music manager Brandon Blackstock put a ring on it last night.
“I’M ENGAGED!!!!! I wanted y’all to know!! Happiest night of my life last night! I am so lucky and am with the greatest man ever :)” she said.
The couple met through Clarkson’s good friend and frequent collaborator, Reba McEntire, who is Blackstock’s stepmother. McEntire’s been married to his dad, musician Narvel Blackstock, since June 3, 1989.
Ever since Clarkson, 30, and Blackstock, 35, who manages Blake Shelton, first got together, she has publicly gushed about how happy he makes her, joking that it had “ruined her creativity” because all she was writing were happy, lovey songs. She also made no secret of her desire to marry him, insisting they would “so” get married one day, but she was just waiting for the ring. It’s not known yet exactly how he proposed.
As for how the couple will celebrate their union? Don’t expect a big wedding spread in a glossy magazine. Said Clarkson when appearing on Ellen DeGeneres this fall: “We will totally, probably elope.”
This will be Clarkson’s first marriage and Blackstock’s second. He has two children, Savannah, 8, and Seth, 5, with ex-wife Melissa. Their divorce was finalized in October 2011 amid reports he had cheated on her multiple times while on the road with his acts.
Later on Saturday, Clarkson Tweeted a photo of her engagement ring – a canary yellow cushion-cut diamond ring with white diamonds surrounding it and adorning the white gold band. She revealed that Blackstock co-designed the ring with Nashville-based jeweler to the stars Johnathon Arndt (who also designed Underwood’s ). Loving the ring, she revealed that she will co-design Blackstock’s wedding band with Arndt, as well.
