New York Knicks forward Amar’e Stoudemire has been out since the beginning of the NBA season with a knee injury, but it appears he’s found something to do with his time off! He was married in a secret ceremony on 12-12-12, to his girlfriend of the past decade, Alexis Welch, on the balcony of their high-end apartment in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. They said their vows in front of just nine guests, including their three children – daughters Ar’e, 7, and Assata, 4, and son Amar’e Jr., 5. Following the ceremony, the couple celebrated a few blocks away at the “12-12-12 Concert for Sandy Relief” at Madison Square Garden, where they witnessed Paul McCartney join Nirvana’s Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic in a legendary, one-off performance, as well as high-energy sets by Jersey boys Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi. The Stoudemires (he worked the phones receiving donations) suffered property damage in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
“12.12.12 now has a special & spiritual meaning for us,” Stoudemire, 30, tweeted last night, showing off the couple’s rings – his band is by Shayan Afshar (who also designed Welch’s engagement ring), while the bride’s wedding band was designed by Harry Glinberg. They chose the day because of the alignment of numbers.
The traditional Jewish ceremony was conducted by a rabbi and followed the couple’s June 2nd engagement on the terrace of the luxury Le Meurice Hotel in Paris. For the wedding ceremony, Stoudemire accompanied a traditional yarmulke and scarf with a tuxedo by Calvin Klein, while Welch wore a custom-made white dress and dark-jeweled headpiece. Their kids also donned custom-designed garb for the ceremony, but aren’t believed to have accompanied their parents to the concert or to STK, a high-end steakhouse where the newlyweds enjoyed their first meal as husband and wife later on Wednesday night. Knicks legend Patrick Ewing was among the guests at the reception dinner, who toasted the newlyweds with champagne – but it’s said no speeches were given nor dessert served.
The New York Post reports that the couple intends to hold a larger ceremony for their family and friends next summer.
